20 Underappreciated Horror Films from the 1990s (P.1)

1. Two Evil Eyes (1990)

Two horror tales based on short stories by Edgar Allan Poe directed by two famous horror directors, George A. Romero and Dario Argento. A greedy wife kills her husband, but not completely. A sleazy reporter adopts a strange black cat.

 

2. Cat In The Brain (1990)

A horror film director is stalked by a mad psychiatrist/serial killer bent on killing people to model the killings after the director's gory death scenes from his movies.

 

3. Jacob's Ladder (1990)

After returning home from the Vietnam War, veteran Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) struggles to maintain his sanity. Plagued by hallucinations and flashbacks, Singer rapidly falls apart as the world and people around him morph and twist into disturbing images. His girlfriend, Jezzie (Elizabeth Peña), and ex-wife, Sarah (Patricia Kalember), try to help, but to little avail. Even Singer's chiropractor friend, Louis (Danny Aiello), fails to reach him as he descends into madness.

 

4. Hardware (1990)

In an America ravaged by atomic warfare, nomads spend their days scavenging for scrap in a blasted landscape. That's how ex-soldier Moses Baxter (Dylan McDermott) comes into possession of some spare android parts. He buys them as a present for his artist girlfriend, Jill (Stacey Travis), who plans to put them in a sculpture. What they don't know is that the pieces come from a new kind of android that is capable of reassembling itself, and is programmed to kill.

 

5. Nightbreed (1990)

Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer) is haunted by terrifying nightmares of a city of monsters. He goes to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Decker (David Cronenberg), for help. But what Boone doesn't know is that Decker is really a serial killer. Decker frames Boone to take the fall for his murders, and Boone is killed by the police. But Boone is brought back to life by the monsters of his dreams, the Nightbreed, who in turn join Boone in his quest to stop Decker from killing again.

 

6. Body Parts (1991)

After losing his arm in a car accident, a criminal psychologist has it replaced with a limb that belonged to a serial killer.

 

7. The Pit and the Pendulum (1991)

Mad monk Torquemada (Lance Henriksen) wants a baker's (Jonathan Fuller) wife (Rona De Ricci) in his torture chamber for the Spanish Inquisition.

 

8. The Devil's Daughter (1991)

A schoolteacher (Kelly Curtis) is given an unspeakable assignment by the leader (Herbert Lom) of a legion of the doomed.

 

9. The Resurrected (1992)

A Rhode Island private eye (John Terry) learns his client's (Jane Sibbett) husband (Chris Sarandon) is a latter-day sorcerer out to bring back the dead.

 

10. Tetsuo II: The Body Hammer (1992)

Psycho skinheads abduct the son of a man (Tomorowo Taguchi) who transforms himself into a hideous killing machine.
